IIT-Delhi PhD student held for Naga girl's murder

NEW DELHI: In what appears to be a bloody retaliation for rejection, a 34-year-old PhD student of IIT-Delhi allegedly murdered and burnt a teenager who was his neighbour in Munirka, south Delhi, on Saturday. The victim, Ramchanphy Hongray, from Nagaland, was visiting her sister.

Hongray’s burnt body was discovered on Saturday evening and her neighbour, Pushpam Sinha, was arrested on Sunday. Initially, police thought it was a case of accidental death but the postmortem report revealed that the 19-year-old girl was strangled to death and burnt.

Sinha, who hails from Patna, had graduated from an engineering college in Allahabad and completed his MSc from IISc, Bangalore. He was doing PhD in wave mechanics from IIT-Delhi on a monthly scholarship of Rs 14,000.

Sinha reportedly told the cops he lived next door to Hongray and she had been rejecting his advances over the past few days. On Saturday afternoon, when she was alone at home, he entered the house and assaulted her.

When she resisted, he allegedly strangled her and then set her body on fire in the kitchen to remove evidence, police said.

A murder case has been registered in the Vasant Vihar station. Sinha will be produced in court on Monday.

The body of the girl has been handed over to the family.

Three teams of Indian scientists win US$ 100,000 worth grants from Gates Foundation

Three teams of scientists from India are among those who will receive grants worth 100,000 dollars each from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to pursue bold ideas for transforming health in developing countries.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced 76 grants of US$ 100,000 each to pursue bold ideas for transforming health in developing countries. The grants support researchers in 16 countries, including three from India, with ideas as diverse as a developing an electronic nose to diagnose tuberculosis and using chocolate to help prevent malaria.

Ranjan Nanda, K V S Rao and Virander Chauhan of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology in Delhi will attempt to create a handheld 'electronic nose' that gathers and analyzes breath samples to diagnose tuberculosis in resource-poor settings while Abani Nag and Amiya Hati of Vivekananda International Health Centre in Kolkata will test whether liver ultrasounds and functional liver enzyme tests can help care providers differentiate between relapse and re-infection of malaria, leading to better treatment in endemic areas.

Deepak Gaur, Chetan Chitnis and Virander Chauhan of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology in Delhi will work to develop a malaria vaccine that blocks invasion pathways used by a wide diversity of malaria parasites.

“Some of the biggest stumbling blocks in global health are now being overcome with promising new vaccines and treatments,” said Dr Tachi Yamada, president of the Gates Foundation’s Global Health Program. “Grand Challenges Explorations will continue to fill the pipeline with possibilities and hopefully produce a breakthrough idea that could save untold numbers of lives.”

In three rounds of the foundation’s Grand Challenges Explorations initiative, 262 researchers representing 30 countries have been awarded grants. Newly-funded projects include efforts to develop a paper cup that turns TB-positive sputum samples a bright orange, use a peptide found in scorpions to block development of the malaria parasite, and adapt a protein that parasites use to seal their egg cases as a “sticky coating” for intranasal vaccines.

Grantees from round three were selected from almost 3,000 proposals. All levels of scientists are represented – from young post-graduate investigators to veteran researchers – as are a wide range of disciplines, such as chemistry, bioengineering, electronics, mechanical engineering, infectious disease, and epidemiology.

Nightmare of a day for commuters

MUMBAI: Around 500 trains were cancelled in the Thane-Ghatkopar section on Friday leaving lakhs stranded, confused and harrowed after a 40-metre
pre-stressed girder fell off a road overbridge that was under construction, and an adjoining water main fell on a passing Kalyan-bound local at 10.55 am. Two people including the motorman died in the accident. Eleven were injured, of whom one is in critical condition.

Central Railway (CR) officials said services between Ghatkopar and CST continued, but the frequency was very low and there was utter chaos at stations. Even though announcements were made at every station, they were muffled and indicators went on the blink. Updates were aired on TV and FM channels, and sent out through Central Railway's SMS Update service.

Commuters had a harrowing time trying to figure out train schedules in the absence of functioning indicators. Since people had no option but to take to the road, taxis and autos made a killing. Traffic was jammed in many parts of the city.

Some jumped onto the tracks in desperation. One commuter who took more than four hours to get to her destination said, "I left Thane at 5 pm and walked on the tracks to Mulund station, which was almost deserted. I then took an auto to Ghatkopar since I was told trains were playing from there to the city. But there were no trains there. I then took another auto to Kurla but it broke down at Chembur. So I got to Kurla on an Andheri-bound Harbour Line train. Switched over to the mainline, and the train the crawled to Masjid. It was stuck between Masjid and Sandhurst Road for more than 30 minutes. I finally got off at Masjid ,'' she said. CR officials said many trains were cancelled due to a shortage of guards and motormen, as many of them were stuck en route. Trains ran normally on the Harbour Line.

One commuter, accountant Geeta Mishra, was lucky enough to be let off early from work. "I live at Kalyan and will have to take a bus from Vashi. This will take over two and a half hours. I am really worried as I don't know what time I'll get home. The station is overcrowded and I had a tough time pushing my way through the unruly crowd of men,'' she said.

Some decided to take a detour, like student Abhay Srinivas, who lives in Thane. He said, "My college is in Churchgate. I've been at the station for two hours, but couldn't get on a single train.'' Businessman Vikki Lassi who had been waiting for over an hour at CST to go back home from work, said, "In the morning we had a harrowing time as the train from Kalyan took over three hours to reach CST.'' He added, "I'll have to take three trains to get home. I don't know when I'll reach home.'' he said. Pune-Mumbai rail services were also severely affected.

Windows 7 a winner for Indian IT vendors

MUMBAI/BANGALORE: Indian IT vendors are gearing up for significant business opportunities in IT consulting, systems integration and infrastructure management as their clients look to migrate from older operating systems (OS) to the latest version Windows 7 (Win 7).

According to industry estimates, around 80% of computer systems still run on Microsoft’s older OS - Windows XP - which was launched eight years ago, making a strong case for upgradation.

“A huge amount of technology refresh was postponed by around one-and-a-half years,” pointed out HCL Technologies VP and end-user computing services head Maninder Singh. The IT exporter is already carrying out pilots with some of its large clients and has created solutions that will help in faster deployment of Win 7.

The opportunities are not just centred around deploying or migrating from an older OS to Win 7 but also around testing the compatibility of existing applications with the new OS and suggesting remedial measures to make them compatible.

KRK kicked out of Bigg Boss

Kamal Rashid Khan aka KRK, who has been courting controversy ever since he entered the Bigg Boss house earlier this month, has been kicked out of the show.

Reason: the Deshdrohi actor lost his temper and hurled a water bottle at designer Rohit Verma, which accidentally ended up hitting actress Shamita Shetty. The actor also had a major tiff with television actor Bakhtiyaar Irani, and almost came to blows with comic Raju Shrivastav.

The housemates, unable to cope with KRK anymore, requested to Bigg Boss that he leave the show. Consequently the actor was asked to pack his bags and vacate the house.

Ashvini Yardi, head of programming, from the channel confirms, “His behaviour was not at all acceptable. We do not advocate the use of violence as a means to settle differences. What Kamal did was completely out of line, and against the rules of the Bigg Boss House, and hence he was asked to leave the house.”
